Technical Statement
Product Description
FireZone 92 is a CLEAR intumescent water based coating which achieves a GROUP 1-S on most timber surface linings. The new tested and improved formula gives an excellent architectural finish while still ensuring the substrate remains compliant.
Features:
- Achieves Group 1-S
- Low VOC/ Waterbased system
- Spray, roll or brush application, on or off site
- Substantial track record for use in Europe and New Zealand
- Applied by Approved Applicators to ensure code compliance
- Can be applied over some stained or varnished substrates with the use of FireZone 92 Adhesion Primer
Scope of use
Fire Performance: Group 1-Son timber substrates (as defined by NZBC CVM2) with a minimum thickness of 9mm and minimum density of 338kg/m3. This covers almost all typically specified timber species.
Sustainability: Fully water based system, low VOC - 69g/L – fits within the Greenstar Build requirements
Environment: Suitable for internal dry environments only, for high moisture internal, semi-external, fully external please refer to FireZone Vanguard.
Application: Application by Zone's network of local approved applicators.
Finish: Clear coat finish, compatible with a range of water based stains
Durability: Relatively hard wearing topcoat, with double topcoat spec available for higher wear and tear environments.
Specification: Specify through Masterspec Section 6743ZF.
New Zealand Building Code (NZBC)
The product will, if employed in accordance with the supplier's installation and maintenance requirements, assist with meeting the following provisions of the building code:
- Clause C3 Fire affecting areas beyond the fire source: Performance C3.4(a)
FireZone 92 has been tested to EN13501-1:2018 in Europe
achieving a B-d0-s1 classification. The classification is valid for timber substrates with a minimum thickness of 9mm and minimum density of 338kg/m3.
According
to the NZBC C/AS2 Table C1.1 – a B-d0-s1 is the equivalent of a
Group 1-S.
According
to C/VM2 A1.6 – a surface applied system’s fire rating is compliant
on any timber substrate of the same of greater thickness and same or greater
density.
Therefore
FireZone 92 meets a Group 1-S fire rating on timber substrates ≥9mm in
thickness and ≥338kg/m3 in density.
Notes
The FireZone 92 system meets the Group 1-S, Group 1, Group 2-S, Group 2 and Group 3 interior surface lining requires as required by C3.4(a). Outlined in NZBC C/AS2 Clause 4.17.
Timber substrates must be for internal use only, with a minimum density of ≥338 kg/m3 and minimum thickness of ≥9mm.
Timber substrates are defined in NZBC CVM2 Verification Method - Clause A1.6 Table A2 - Timber, Standard grade plywood, hardboard,
fibre/particleboard.

Product Criteria
Design requirements
Specify when a clear coat finish is desired on timber substrates. Available in a matt or satin finish.
Interior dry application only.
Clear adhesion primer available for previously coated substrates.
Water based stains can be applied prior to the FireZone 92 system without the adhesion primer.
Double topcoat specification available for higher wear and tear environments.
Installation requirements
FireZone 92 must be applied by a Zone approved applicator.
Can be applied on or offsite.
See FireZone 92 technical data sheet for in depth application requirements.
Maintenance requirements
FireZone 92 system should be checked by the building owner or maintenance team for mechanical damage or moisture damage.
If damage is observed please get in touch with Zone Architectural Products for guidance or refer to the FireZone 92 Maintenance Guidelines.
The FireZone 92 system may require another topcoat application 5-7 years after initial application.
