Scope of use

Solatube Daylight Systems and Roof Penetrations are for use on domestic and commercial buildings within the following scope:

• the scope limitations of E2/AS1, Paragraph 1.1 with respect to building height and maximum floor plan areas
• with building structures designed and constructed to meet the requirements of the NZ Building Code
• with roof cladding types and profiles specified in E2/AS1 and
• for use on flat or nominally flat roofs making use of membrane use systems, and
• situated in NZS 3604 Wind Zones, up to and including 'Very High'

Installs of Solatube Daylighting Systems and Roof Penetrations must only be carried out by HomeTech Certified Installers.

New Zealand Building Code (NZBC)

The product will, if employed in accordance with the supplier's installation and maintenance requirements, assist with meeting the following provisions of the building code:

• Clause B2 Durability: Performance B2.3.1

  15 years. Solatube Daylight Systems and Roof Penetrations meet this requirement. Solatube Daylight Systems and Roof Penetrations installations will remain effective with a serviceable life in excess of 15 years, provided they are installed following the instructions of HomeTech Ltd and this Appraisal

• Clause E2 External moisture: Performance E2.3.1, E2.3.2

  Solatube Daylight Systems and Roof Penetrations meet these requirement. The Solatube Daylight Systems and Roof Penetrations, when installed in accordance with this Appraisal and the Technical Literature, will prevent the penetration of moisture that could cause undue dampness or damage to building elements.

• Clause F2 Hazardous building materials: Performance F2.3.1

  Solatube Daylight Systems and Roof Penetrations meet this requirement.

• Clause G4 Ventilation: Performance G4.3.3

   Solatube Daylight Systems and Roof Penetrations, when installed as a ventilation duct, will contribute to meeting these requirements. When a Solatube Daylight System and Roof Penetration is installed and used as a ventilation duct, incorporating a fan, the ventilation system must satisfy the mechanical ventilation requirements of NZBC Acceptable Solution G4/AS1. 

• Clause G7 Natural light: Performance G7.3.1, G7.3.2

   Solatube Daylight Systems and Roof Penetrations will contribute to meeting these requirements. The Solatube Daylight Systems and Roof Penetrations can assist in meeting the NZBC requirements for provision of sufficient natural light to building interiors

• Clause H1 Energy efficiency : Performance H1.3.1

  Solatube Daylight Systems and Roof Penetrations will contribute to meeting this requirement.  The polycarbonate light diffusion units mounted on the ceiling with a thermal insulation panel gives an R-value of 0.48 and without it gives an R-value of 0.35, thus satisfying the higher skylight R value requirement of 0.34 m²K/W.

Product Criteria

Design requirements

Product specification and incorporation of a Solatube Daylighting Device into the building design shall be carried out by a designer/architect/engineer or building professional who:

• Is qualified to design the buildings covered under the 'Scope' of use of this product. 
• Has ready access to the technical specifications including installation details and standards referenced in the BRANZ Appraisal No. 665 where the design limitations are outlined for the scope of this PTS.

Installation requirements

Solatube Daylighting Systems are installed by the nationwide wide network of certified installation consultants.

• 10 year warranty on Product
• 10 year warranty on Installation by a Certified Installation Consultant
• Tray flashing required for Ministry of Education projects
• Tray flashing may be required for roof pitch below 10 degrees

Maintenance requirements

• Minimal maintenance is needed for the Solatube Daylighting Systems.  It is a sealed unit so should not require cleaning inside.
• Ten year warranty on parts and labour as long as the product is maintained or serviced by a Solatube certified installation consultant.
• Combined mechanical ventilation - 5 year warranty on fan.
• The installation warranty is void if re-flashed or serviced by any independent contractor who is not a certified installation consultant. 
• Replacement diffusers available

Warrantees

• Ten year warranty on parts and installation as long as the product is maintained or serviced by a Solatube certified installation consultant.
• Combined mechanical ventilation - 5 year warranty on fan.
• The installation warranty is void if re-flashed or serviced by any independent contractor who is not a certified installation consultant.
