Compliance Statement
Scope of Use
SPS Basket Traps are primarily designed for commercial and
industrial settings such as commercial kitchens, food processing plants, bars,
and refuse areas where capturing solid waste like food debris is vital before
wastewater enters the drainage system.
They serve as an essential first stage
in trade waste pre-treatment, helping to meet discharge standards. Basket Traps
should only be used indoors. These products are not suitable for stormwater
applications. They must be installed on floors with cement screed, vinyl,
tiles, or resin finishes.
Constructed from durable materials such as stainless
steel, bronze, and cast iron, the traps feature removable and fixed strainers,
as well as a range of grate designs (round, square, hinged, bayonet) to match
different flooring and access requirements.
Correct sizing, installation, and
maintenance are crucial for compliance with NZBC E1, G13, and relevant
standards.
New Zealand Building Code (NZBC)
The product will, if employed in accordance with the supplier's installation and maintenance requirements, assist with meeting the following provisions of the building code:
- Clause E1 Surface water: Performance E1.3.1, E1.3.2, E1.3.3, E1.3.3(a), E1.3.3(b), E1.3.3(c), E1.3.3(d), E1.3.3(e), E1.3.3(f)
SPS Basket Trap Drains help meet all E1 Surface Water code
requirements by efficiently collecting and conveying surface water to suitable
outfalls, using gravity flow where possible (E1.3.3a). Their removable baskets
prevent blockages (E1.3.3b), and their robust, watertight design prevents
leakage and root ingress (E1.3.3c).
Proper installation ensures surface water does not enter
buildings during heavy rainfall (E1.3.2) and prevents damage or nuisance to
neighbouring properties (E1.3.1). By adhering to Acceptable Solutions such as
E1/AS1 and industry standards, they help protect people, property, and drainage
system outfalls from the adverse effects of surface water, as required under
all E1 performance clauses. - Clause G13 Foul water: Performance G13.3.1, G13.3.1(a), G13.3.1(b), G13.3.1(c), G13.3.1(d), G13.3.2, G13.3.2(a), G13.3.2(b), G13.3.2(c), G13.3.2(d), G13.3.2(e), G13.3.2(f), G13.3.3, G13.3.4, G13.3.4(a), G13.3.4(b), G13.3.4(c), G13.3.4(d), G13.3.4(e), G13.3.4(f), G13.3.4(g), G13.3.4(h), G13.3.4(i), G13.3.4(j), G13.3.4(k)
SPS Basket Trap Drains satisfy all G13 Foul Water clauses by
capturing solids, preventing blockages (G13.3.1, G13.3.2b), and safely
conveying wastewater to appropriate outfalls (G13.3.1a, G13.3.2a). Their
robust, watertight construction and correct installation avoid leaks and root
entry (G13.3.1b, G13.3.2c), while basket access enables maintenance and
cleaning (G13.3.1d, G13.3.2d).
Designed for durability, they resist damage from loads or
ground movement (G13.3.2f) and can integrate with venting systems to avoid
foul air in buildings (G13.3.1c, G13.3.2e).
Notes
SPS Basket Traps are designed to
comply with the NZBC requirements Clauses E1 Surface Water and G13 Foul Water.
G13 – SPS Basket Trap Floor Wastes comply with
G13/AS1, which is the Acceptable Solution for Clause G13. SPS drains are
designed to safely trap solid waste and food debris, ensure watertightness,
and allow access for cleaning. Their compliance is recognised for settings
such as kitchens, food processing, and similar environments. Importantly,
they meet both the NZBC and the relevant standard AS/NZS 3500.2.2.
E1–SPS drains are designed to meet Clause E1 by
providing drainage solutions that protect buildings from surface water
risks. This includes resilience against surface water ingress, which is
vital for E1 compliance. These drains will help prevent surface water from
entering foul water systems and causing flooding or nuisance, aligning
with the Code’s intent.
SPS Basket
Traps have secondary relevance to B1-Structure and B2-Durability regarding robustness.
Evidence
The product meets the requirements set out in the following documents, or relevant parts of cited standards within the documents:
SPS Basket Trap Drains are designed to meet NZBC E1 (Surface
Water) standards by effectively collecting and guiding surface water from floor
areas into the drainage system, reducing the risk of flooding, water ingress,
or nuisance on site. Their design includes removable baskets to intercept
debris and prevent blockages, facilitating easy maintenance and ensuring
optimal water flow.
For G13 (Foul Water), SPS Basket Traps comply with G13/AS1
and AS/NZS 3500.2 standards by providing watertightness, preventing foul air
leaks, and maintaining hygiene through debris isolation and accessible
cleaning.
Constructed from stainless steel, bronze, or cast iron, they meet B2
(Durability) requirements for a long service life. Certified load ratings for certain models (e.g., Class C) conform to B1 (Structure), allow them to withstand
commercial floor loads without failure.
Correct product selection, installation
according to manufacturer instructions, and regular maintenance are essential
to consistently meet these standards, ensuring reliable and compliant
performance in demanding environments.
Design requirements
The SPS Basket Trap range is designed for cement toppings
and vinyl flooring surfaces in commercial kitchens, food processing plants,
bars, and similar areas where capturing solid debris before wastewater enters
the plumbing is crucial.
Restrictions include exclusive use in commercial or
industrial settings and installation according to the specified outlet size,
number, and floor type. SPS Basket Traps with O-rings fit into 100mm and 150mm
PVC or HDPE pipes.
Appearance options include round or square 304 or 316
stainless steel grates, with polished or satin finishes. The bodies are made
from stainless steel or cast iron.
Features include easy-access bayonet or
hinged grates, removable baskets, a fixed strainer, Load Class C ratings, and
height-adjustable grates. Alternative grates and fixings are available to meet
site-specific requirements.
Installation involves placing the trap below the floor
in riser pipes; for vinyl floors, a clamping ring is used.
Installation requirements
SPS
Basket Traps need a stable, level surface such as concrete, screed, or sheet
vinyl, free of debris and prepared for secure fitting and fixture stability.
Installation should take place in ambient temperatures suitable for handling
piping and drain materials, avoiding extreme weather that could affect sealing
and jointing.
Installers must comply with NZBC and NZS standards. Preparatory
work includes verifying pipe alignments and ensuring pipe ends are clean; floor
surfaces should be prepared for waterproofing if needed.
Fixing entails
securely installing the trap into the pipe or leak control flange with proper
sealing to ensure watertight joints by NZBC solutions G13/AS1 and E1/AS1.
For
vinyl floors, a clamping ring is used to secure the flooring to the grate.
Grates are fixed with screws or bayonet fittings.
Final steps include ensuring
the floor is flush to prevent trip hazards and to enable proper drainage.
Installation guides are available in datasheets and the SPS catalogue.
Maintenance requirements
With
regular maintenance, SPS Basket Traps will meet NZBC B2 standards to ensure durability.
Maintenance includes cleaning debris from the removable basket when needed or
at the end of a shift, and conducting regular checks for blockages, damage, or
water ponding.
Neglecting maintenance can cause system blockages and reduce
durability, which may void warranties. During construction, contractors must
prevent exposure to corrosive substances or mechanical damage. Businesses
should stick to cleaning schedules and quickly resolve blockages to avoid early
deterioration.
Use non-corrosive chemicals for cleaning. Do not use a wire
brush on the grate, as it will damage the surface. Flushing with hot water
occasionally helps remove buildup and prevents organic matter growth.
At the
end of its life, SPS products made from stainless steel, bronze, or cast iron are
recyclable, supporting environmentally responsible recycling and disposal.
