When a fire is first lit, the fire takes its air from the room, and as it continues to burn, combustion air needs to be provided for trouble free burning.  As the chimney pulls air through the fireplace, negative air pressure can be created in the house, which can actually draw smoke backward down the chimney, causing back drafting.  To eliminate this back draft, Warmington developed the 'Caitec' system which allows outside air to enter the home as the fire needs it.
