Compliance Statement
Scope of Use
SPS Floor Drains are designed for efficient water removal in residential, commercial, and industrial settings such as bathrooms, kitchens, garages, office, retail, hospitality & warehouse floors, balconies, podium areas, and car parks. They feature round or square grates and are made from stainless steel, bronze, cast iron, or ABS, with finishes like polished, brushed, or non-slip.
SPS drains are compatible with tiles, vinyl, epoxy, and pavers, offering options such as heel-safe grates, height adjusters, puddle flanges, and security screws. Intended for areas needing reliable drainage, they must be installed with correct outlet sizing, secure pipe connections, and proper alignment to meet NZBC G13 and E1.
Restrictions include using suitable materials for chemicals or heavy loads, following the building code for waterproofing, and ensuring regular maintenance.
Proper selection, installation, and maintenance are essential for ensuring safety, durability, and compliance.
New Zealand Building Code (NZBC)
The product will, if employed in accordance with the supplier's installation and maintenance requirements, assist with meeting the following provisions of the building code:
- Clause E1 Surface water: Performance E1.3.1, E1.3.2, E1.3.3, E1.3.3(a), E1.3.3(b), E1.3.3(c), E1.3.3(d), E1.3.3(e), E1.3.3(f)
Compliance with Clause E1 (Surface Water)
Surface Water Management:
The design of the SPS floor drain also supports the collection and safe disposal of surface water in wet areas, contributing to compliance with Clause E1 (Surface Water).
This helps protect people and property from injury, illness, or damage caused by surface water.
Compliance is contingent upon correct product selection, appropriate drain outlet sizing, the number of drains installed, and adherence to manufacturer installation guidelines. These considerations ensure that the system meets all relevant E1 performance requirements. - Clause G13 Foul water: Performance G13.3.1, G13.3.1(a), G13.3.1(b), G13.3.1(c), G13.3.1(d), G13.3.2, G13.3.2(a), G13.3.2(b), G13.3.2(c), G13.3.2(d), G13.3.2(e), G13.3.2(f), G13.3.3, G13.3.4, G13.3.4(a), G13.3.4(b), G13.3.4(c), G13.3.4(d), G13.3.4(e), G13.3.4(f), G13.3.4(g), G13.3.4(h), G13.3.4(i), G13.3.4(j), G13.3.4(k)
Compliance with Clause G13 (Foul Water)
SPS Floor Drains are engineered to meet the requirements of NZBC Clause G13 (Foul Water), as well as the corresponding Australian standards, including AS/NZS 3500.2.2. These standards establish the objectives, functional requirements, and performance criteria for plumbing and drainage systems to ensure the safe and effective management of foul water in buildings.
Performance Features:
SPS floor drains provide:
- Safe conveyance of foul water to the drainage system, as required by G13.2 and G13.3.1(a)
- Prevention of leaks, blockages, and odours
- Easy maintenance and long-term durability
- Compatibility with various pipe materials and configurations, supporting compliance across different building types and layouts.
Market Acceptance and History:
SPS products have been used in New Zealand for over 25 years and are widely adopted in commercial kitchens, healthcare settings, and public amenities where code compliance is essential. Their long-standing market presence reflects their reliability and ability to meet code requirements.
Installation and Selection:
Compliance is contingent upon correct product selection, appropriate drain outlet sizing, the number of drains installed, and adherence to manufacturer installation guidelines. These considerations ensure that the system meets all relevant G13 performance requirements.
Notes
SPS floor drains directly relate to and help achieve compliance with NZBC Clauses G13 (Foul Water) and E1 (Surface Water) by providing durable, watertight, and maintainable drainage solutions that safeguard building occupants and property from the risks associated with foul and surface water.
Correct selection, installation, and maintenance are essential for full compliance with these NZBC requirements.
Evidence
The product meets the requirements set out in the following documents, or relevant parts of cited standards within the documents:
SPS floor drains are supported by engineering design, and adhere to New Zealand and Australian standards, and have a proven track record in demanding applications providing evidence of compliance with NZBC Clauses G13 and E1. Full compliance is achieved when the products are correctly selected, installed and maintained according to manufacturer and code requirements.
Individual data sheets are provided for SPS floor drains detail specifications such as material grades, outlet sizes, load ratings, and installation requirements. These data sheets are available on the Metabronze Industries website, providing technical information, dimensions, material options, and application notes for each drain model.
The SPS Product Manual includes specifications, drawings, material details, flow rates, load ratings, and strainer descriptions for floor wastes and roof drains. It covers construction features, sizes, and compliance with standards like AS3996-2006 and AS/NZS 3500.2.2.Watermark Certification:
The SPS Q100/80SR Floor Drain is Watermark Certified - AT 55200:040.
Design requirements
SPS Floor Drains are suitable for use in both residential and commercial settings and are employed in various indoor and outdoor environments. They feature round or square grates and are made from materials such as 304-316 grade stainless steel, bronze, cast iron, or ABS, with finishes including polished, brushed, or non-slip options.
These floor drains are compatible with cement, tiles, epoxy finishes, vinyl (with clamping drains), and pavers.
Key features include heel-safe and hinged grates, height-adjustable assemblies, retrofit puddle flange models, load-bearing options, pipe fitting adaptors, and O-rings compatible with PVC, HDPE, and copper pipes.
Choosing the correct outlet size, ensuring the pipe connection is secure, providing sufficient load capacity, and properly aligning the grate with the floor levels are essential for a compliant installation.
Maintaining the floor drains through regular cleaning and inspections remains necessary.
Installation requirements
Select a drain that is compatible with the expected environment, considering factors such as an internal or external location, pedestrian & vehicle traffic, and the projected volume of water present on the floor or podium area at any one time.
Only when the above factors are provided for, other considerations include aesthetic appeal, and the amount of fall, if any.
Ensure the surface is adequately cured, smooth and free of debris that may interfere with installation.
Consider height-adjustable drain components with finished surfaces such as tiles, pavers, and cement toppings.
Match the drain O-ring material with the pipe material (i.e. PVC, HDPE, or Copper) to ensure compatibility and the prevention of leaks.
Position the drain at the lowest point on the floor for optimal drainage, or ensure the floor has the correct fall when it is being set.
Ensure compliance with all applicable Building and Plumbing Standards.
Refer to the SPS Product Datasheet.
Maintenance requirements
Clean floor drains every 3-4 months. Drains should be free of debris and dirt that can cause blockages.
Avoid corrosive chemicals when cleaning. Using a natural solution will eliminate staining. Do not use a wire brush on the grate as it will damage the surface.
Inspect annually for blockages, ponding water, or damage. Clear debris, such as leaves and dirt to prevent clogs.
Flushing with hot water periodically removes buildup and will assist with preventing the growth of organic matter.
Failure to maintain SPS Floor Drain products will void all warranties.
Recycling Guidance;
- Stainless Steel (304/316): Highly recyclable; Clean and sort before recycling.
- Cast Iron: Easily recycled; may need to remove any coatings.
- Bronze: Valuable and widely accepted at recycling facilities.
- ABS Plastic: Recyclable; Remove metal parts before recycling.
